Here is a most unusual kind of haven in Miami — one where the business of movies, the craft of filmmaking and the love of cinema all intersect. No wonder they want to keep the location quiet.

Here, too, is something you won’t find anywhere else in South Florida: A multimedia company with a decade’s worth of work that has earned national attention; several intriguing projects in the pipeline (including what is likely to be their most commercial film to date); and absolutely no plans to ever relocate.

The bond between Corben, Spellman and Cypkin — who are all 33, became friends at Highland Oaks Middle School, made their first short film in high school and co-founded rakontur in 2001 — has grown stronger with each of their successes.

Mon March 26 @ 7:30pm: Raw Deal: A Question of Consent
rakontur’s debut that Film Threat Magazine calls, "One of the most compelling pieces of non-fiction ever produced." An official selection of the Sundance Film Festival in 2001, Raw Deal reconstructs the events surrounding the alleged rape of an exotic dancer at a fraternity house at the University of Florida, using actual videotape of the alleged assault. Q&A will follow screening.

Tue March 27 @ 7:30pm: Cocaine Cowboys Cast Reunion
For the first time ever, the cast of the original Cocaine Cowboys assembles for a night of clips and Q&A -- featuring never-before-seen footage from the upcoming Cocaine Cowboys Remix. Scheduled to attend: Mickey Munday, Edna Buchanan, Raul Diaz, Sam Burstyn, Nelson Andreu and Al Sunshine.

Wed March 28 @ 7:30pm: ESPN 30 for 30 The U: Extended Cut
One of the most watched documentaries in ESPN history, The U tells the tale of the University of Miami Hurricanes football program -- with an additional 20 minutes of footage not seen on ESPN. Q&A will follow with special surprise guests.

*** At 7:15pm, a special pre-show presentation: The short film ‘Life and Freaky Times of Uncle Luke,’ 2012 Sundance Film Festival Official Selection, produced by Borscht Corp and executive produced by rakontur ***

Thu March 29 @ 7:30pm: Square Grouper
An unofficial prequel to Cocaine Cowboys, Square Grouper tells three stories of the freewheeling 1970s Miami pot hauling culture. Salon calls it, "A hilarious, tragic tale of Florida ganja infused with the spirit of Elmore Leonard and Jimmy Buffett." Q&A will follow with Robert Platshorn of The Black Tuna Gang, the longest serving nonviolent marijuana prisoner in American history.

Fri March 30 @ 7:30pm: An Evening with rakontur
Clips and Q&A -- featuring never-before-seen footage from upcoming docs Dawg Fight, Cocaine Cowboys Remix and our new ESPN 30 for 30 documentary -- with rakontur founders Alfred Spellman and Billy Corben, hosted by award-winning investigative journalist Jim DeFede of CBS Miami. After-party at Wood Tavern.

Billy and Alfred have a strong Miami sensibility: Their movies are very redolent of that city,” says Eamonn Bowles, president of Magnolia Pictures, which has distributed several of rakontur’s films theatrically and on DVD.

“Cocaine Cowboys did an amazing job of soaking up the color and culture and details of that era. But their greatest attribute is a nose for an interesting story. Every film they’ve done has had jaw-dropping aspects to it. They make you say ‘Whaaat?’ And they keep getting better as filmmakers. The leap from Raw Deal to Cocaine Cowboys was incredible, and they’ve only improved since then.
