Famed criminal defense attorney Roy Black said in 1986, “The amount of intrigue that goes on here is remarkable...Miami really is not an American city.”
We’re grateful it isn’t.
When our first pop-doc Raw Deal: A Question of Consent premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2001, we were the youngest filmmakers ever invited and the only ones from South Florida. When Raw Deal landed on the cover of the New York Post, everyone asked when we’d be moving to New York or Los Angeles to seek fortune and fame in the movie business.
We charted a different course.
In the wake of Carl Hiaasen, Edna Buchanan and Dave Barry, we wanted to carve a niche chronicling the intrigue, drama and absurdity of life in Florida. For the past ten years, we’ve been fortunate enough to do just that.
In our movies, Florida doesn’t always look as pretty as the postcards -- it’s been said that we document “Florida’s seedy underbelly” -- but we prefer to think of them as twisted love letters to our home. They’re for everyone who knows (and needs to know) that this place is more than just cutaways to Ocean Drive during nationally televised sporting events.
So please come join us to celebrate our first decade of storytelling with a week-long series of screenings, panels and parties at the O Cinema in Miami's Wynwood neighborhood, Monday March 26th thru Friday March 30th.
It’ll be like a family reunion, where we all get together to celebrate not only our mutual love and respect, but our dysfunction.
To paraphrase Roy: The great thing about Miami is that it’s so close to the United States.
