I smuggled marijuana with my friends in E-city and Chokoloskee for nearly a decade before we were all rounded up during "Operation Peacemaker" in October, 1988. Some of us were lucky enough not to get caught up in "Operation Everglades l and ll". There were many times during those years when one of the many crab boats that took turns pot hauling would get spooked or for good reason toss thier load. Then it was a first-come-first-serve free for all of "square grouper". The key was, once the word got out, you had to get to it fast before they got too wet. Using rolls of screen, many a times we would have thousands of pounds strung up through the tree's in the mangrove forests miles south of Ckokoloskee. Here it would be rinsed and dried then repackaged for sale. Eventhough we were making an outragous amount of cash hauling pot regularly, it never hurt to have more free money.
Square Grouper was just part of a way of life. Check out my story @www.saltwatercowboys.org.
