If you’re a fan of Scarface and Miami Vice then prepare yourself for the ultimate documentary. Fast paced and more addictive than a cocaine/crack/meth cocktail, this maps out the story of how some enterprising Americans and the Colombian drug cartels transformed Miami from a sleepy vacation/retirement destination into a mecca of drugs and some of the most violent crime ever seen in America in the late ’70s and early ’80s. From drug runners to hit men to lawyers to cops, the filmmakers found some of the most interesting subjects who don’t waste a second when it comes to detailing drug-running methods, assassination techniques, and lifestyles that even Tony Montana would find excessive. It doesn’t stop after the movie, either. The deleted scenes offer up even more insight, as does a separate documentary about a West Coast drug dealer’s involvement. Complete with tons of archived video and photos, Cocaine Cowboys will have you shaking your head in disbelief, as well as giving you a much better understanding of why the infamous “war on drugs” wasn’t such a bad idea at the time. (We said at the time!)
